1. Who we are
This Privacy Policy explains how Safety Electrical Services Pty Ltd (ACN 008 090 953, ABN 23 008 090 953), trading as HelpAlert (“HelpAlert”, “we”, “us”, “our”), collects, uses, stores and discloses personal information when you use the HelpAlert mobile app and related services (the “Service”).
We are based in Australia. Our registered address is 25–29 Norman Road, Yatala Vale, South Australia 5126, Australia.
If you have any questions about this policy or your personal information, contact us at [email protected].
This policy should be read together with our Terms & Conditions.
2. What HelpAlert does (so this policy makes sense)
HelpAlert helps a carer arrange automated welfare check-in calls for a cared-for person (for example, an elderly parent). The carer adds the person, sets one or more daily call times, and records a short spoken greeting. At each scheduled time our system places an automated voice call to the cared-for person and plays the greeting. If the person does not respond, HelpAlert notifies the carer by push notification, email and/or a voice call.
Because of how this works, HelpAlert handles personal information about two kinds of people: the carer who holds the account, and the cared-for person the carer adds.
3. Information we collect
3.1 Information the carer gives us
- Account details: your name, email address, and the identifier from the Google or Apple account you sign in with.
- Your phone number and country code (used to call or notify you).
- Your time zone.
3.2 Information about the cared-for person
When you add a cared-for person, you provide, and we collect and store:
- their name;
- their phone number and country code;
- their time zone;
- a voice greeting you record for them (see section 3.3);
- the call schedule you set for them.
Your responsibility, and their confirmation. You must have the authority or consent of the cared-for person to provide their details and to arrange automated calls to them. By adding a person, you confirm you have that authority.
We may also ask the cared-for person to confirm directly that they agree to receive these calls before calls to them begin, and we may stop calling a person who asks us to stop, whether they ask us or ask you. A cared-for person can contact us at any time at [email protected] to ask what information we hold about them, to correct it, or to ask us to stop calling.
3.3 Voice recordings
The greeting you record is audio of your voice. We store it and play it to the cared-for person during calls. We do not record the cared-for person’s side of a call, and we do not use recordings for any purpose other than making the call you set up.
3.4 Call and notification records
We keep records of the calls the Service makes and the notifications it sends, including the time, the number called, whether the call was answered, and whether the person responded. We use these to run the escalation logic, to show you your history in the app, and to support you.
3.5 Information collected automatically
- Device and technical data: a push-notification token, your device platform (iOS/Android), and the app version you are running (used to deliver notifications and to support you).
- Usage and advertising data: app usage events and advertising identifiers (see sections 4.1 and 13).
3.6 Payment information
Subscriptions are billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Those stores handle your payment details — we never receive or store your card number. We receive confirmation of your subscription status through RevenueCat (see section 6).
3.7 Information we do not collect
We do not collect health records, location data, contacts from your device, or government identifiers. The HelpAlert app does not request location permission.
4. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- create and manage your account;
- place the scheduled welfare calls and play your recorded greeting;
- detect whether the cared-for person responded, and escalate to you if they did not;
- send you notifications by push, email and/or voice call;
- send weekly reminders where you have enabled them;
- manage your subscription and entitlements;
- provide support and respond to your messages;
- keep the Service secure, diagnose problems, and improve it;
- measure and improve our advertising (see section 4.1).
We do not sell your personal information.
4.1 Advertising and measurement
We advertise HelpAlert on platforms including Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google. To understand which advertisements lead people to install and subscribe, the app sends app activity events — such as opening the app, starting a trial, and completing a subscription, together with the purchase amount and currency — and an advertising identifier to those platforms.
We do not send your name, email address or phone number to advertising platforms, and we do not send any information about the people in your care, your call history, or your recordings.
On iOS, the app asks your permission before using the advertising identifier for tracking, and you can refuse. You can also limit advertising tracking in your device settings at any time: on iOS under Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, and on Android under Settings → Privacy → Ads.
5. The frameworks that apply
We are based in Australia and promote HelpAlert in North America, so more than one privacy framework may apply to you:
- Australia — we handle personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles (Privacy Act 1988).
- United States — depending on where you live, state privacy laws may give you additional rights; California residents have specific rights under the CCPA/CPRA (see section 10.1).
- Canada — if you are in Canada, PIPEDA may apply (see section 10.2).
In all cases we collect only what we need to provide the Service, and use it only for the purposes described in this policy or as you would reasonably expect.
6. Who we share it with
We do not sell your data. We share it with service providers who help us run the Service, only as needed for them to perform their function:
| Provider | What it does | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Vonage | Places the voice calls | The cared-for person’s phone number; your number for carer calls |
| Google / Firebase | Sign-in, push notifications, analytics | Account identifier, push token, usage data |
| SMTP2GO | Sends notification emails | Recipient email address, notification content |
| Amazon Web Services (S3) | Stores your recorded greeting | The voice recording |
| RevenueCat | Manages your subscription | A subscription identifier and status |
| Meta | Advertising measurement | App activity events and an advertising identifier (see section 4.1) |
| Cloudflare | Protects and delivers our services | Network traffic data |
| Apple / Google | App stores and payment processing | Your payment details (held by them, not us) |
We may also disclose personal information if required by law, to protect someone’s safety, or in connection with a sale or restructure of our business.
7. Overseas disclosure
Some of the providers above store or process data outside Australia, principally in the United States. Our application servers are located in the United States, and recorded greetings are stored in Amazon Web Services in the United States.
By using the Service you acknowledge that your information, and the cared-for person’s information, may be handled overseas. We take reasonable steps to ensure these providers protect your information.
8. How long we keep it
- Account and cared-for person data: kept while your account is active.
- Voice recordings: deleted when you remove that person from your care, or when you delete your account.
- Call and notification history: kept for 12 months.
- After account deletion: we delete or de-identify your personal information, and that of the people in your care including their recorded greetings, within 30 days of your request.
- Exceptions: we may keep certain records for longer where the law requires it (for example, transaction records for tax purposes), and only for as long as required.
9. How we protect it
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, loss, and unauthorised access. These include encryption of data in transit using HTTPS, authentication tokens for access to your account, restricted administrative access to our servers, and access controls on the systems that store recordings. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
You can turn on Local Authentication in the app to require your device’s biometric or PIN before the app opens.
10. Your rights and choices
You may:
- Access the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct it if it is wrong;
- delete your account (see section 11);
- withdraw by turning off calls for a person, or removing them;
- complain if you think we have mishandled your information.
These rights are also available to a cared-for person in respect of the information we hold about them, whether or not they hold an account.
To exercise any of these, email [email protected]. We will respond within a reasonable time, and in any case within 30 days.
10.1 If you are a California resident (CCPA / CPRA)
California residents have additional rights. In the past 12 months we have collected the following categories of personal information:
- Identifiers — name, email address, phone number, account and device identifiers;
- Audio information — the greeting you record;
- Commercial information — your subscription status;
- Internet or app activity — usage and analytics data.
We collect this from you and automatically from your use of the app, for the purposes in section 4, and we disclose it to the service providers in section 6 to operate the Service.
We do not “sell” your personal information for money. As described in section 4.1, we do share app activity events and an advertising identifier with advertising platforms so that we can measure and improve our advertising. Under California law this may be treated as “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising.
To opt out, you can refuse the tracking permission the app requests on iOS, or limit ad tracking in your device settings on either platform (see section 4.1), or email [email protected] and we will action your request.
You have the right to: know / access the personal information we hold about you; delete it; correct it; and limit the use of sensitive personal information. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
To make a request, email [email protected]. We will take reasonable steps to verify your identity, and you may use an authorised agent. Under California’s “Shine the Light” law (Civil Code §1798.83), we confirm we do not share personal information with third parties for their own direct marketing.
10.2 If you are in Canada (PIPEDA)
If you are in Canada, you may access and correct your personal information and withdraw your consent to our handling of it (which may mean we can no longer provide the Service). Contact [email protected].
11. Deleting your account
You can delete your account from Account → Delete Account in the app. Deleting your account removes your personal information and the details of the people in your care, including their recorded greetings, within the period described in section 8 and subject to the retention exceptions in that section.
12. Children
HelpAlert is intended for use by adults aged 18 or over and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and — consistent with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) — we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact [email protected] and we will delete it. The people you care for are expected to be adults.
13. Analytics
We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand how the app is used so we can improve it, and Meta’s app events for the advertising measurement described in section 4.1. Together these collect app usage events, an app version, and a device or advertising identifier. They do not receive your name, email address or phone number.
14. Links to other sites
The app and this policy may link to third-party sites (such as the app stores). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites; read their policies separately.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will change the “Last updated” date above and, for significant changes, notify you in the app or by email at least one month before the change takes effect.
16. Contact us and complaints
For any privacy question or complaint, contact us at [email protected], and we will work with you to resolve it.
- Australia — if you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
- United States — California residents may also contact the California Attorney General’s office.
- Canada — you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
